Why Marijuana Should be Legal

Editorial Review:
Far from being a crippling addictive lure, marijuana is actually “one of the most benign substances known to man,” according to this fact-filled and impassioned pro-pot manifesto originally published in 1996. The authors, marijuana-law reform activists, detail weed’s many medicinal uses in the treatment of diseases like AIDS, glaucoma and cancer, examine the wonders of industrial hemp, and tout legalized marijuana as a potential economic boon and a lucrative tax-cow. The real problem, they argue, is the criminalization of marijuana, which has wasted untold billions, trampled our Constitutional liberties and thrown millions of otherwise law-abiding citizens into jail even as it has fueled crime by taking marijuana out of the legal marketplace and putting it in the hands of criminal syndicates. They blame this policy of prohibition on an unholy alliance of panicky parents, pharmaceutical and liquor companies eager to maintain their monopoly on medicinal and mind-altering substances, and the law-enforcement and prison industries that thrive on the war against pot.

I agree with you fully. The medicinal and ECONOMICAL possibilities are astounding when it comes to the hemp plant. You could pretty much create a shitload with it. You could make food, clothing, paper, even gas if we really wanted to! The possibilities are amazing. The government taxes cigarrettes. Why not sell it like that? Uncle Sam taxes everything anyway. If their argument is that it’s a drug…..look at alcohol. People do stupid shit when they are drunk, its a depressant, so whats with that? We need to legalize and distribute. The crime rate would definitelty go down. Thousands of people get picked up for it and its quite rediculous. Jails would open up more and there would be a lot of happy people I can tell you that much. I agree with you fully on the idea of legalizing it. The people of the united states need to stand up and say “Hey, legalize it!” just like they did for prohibition.

Well i look at it as: marijuana should be legal b/c of the abilities it has within its yield for example look at people with problems such as saying words clearly, when they were given the chance to use marijuana as a medication; as soon as they take a toke their problem will vanish….and as for it being harmful look at alcohol; it is harmful to our livers but we have that legalized and as far as making money the government can tax it just like they do with cigarrettes. My personal opinion about why it hasn’t been legealized is b/c the government wants to make more money on other medications that only prolong the problem instead of it being about the people and solving the problems.

  3. Jack Minster says:

I definately agree with legalizing marijuana because of the fact that acohol is being abused but is still legal for 21 year-olds to buy. I feel that there should be an age and certain rules under using the substance created by the government, but to not use it is extremely unfair. America is suppossed to be a free country where the people decide to make their own decisions. If the government legalized marijuana, they would make billions of dollars in tax which could be used to help out are military and different sources. If they don’t legalize the substance, then they are withholding a right that every American should have.

  4. playtoh says:

Thanks for your comment Jack, just one thing regarding your statement . .
” If the government legalized marijuana, they would make billions of dollars in tax which could be used to help out our military and different sources.”
I think that y(our) military, be it clandestine or ‘real’ or blackwater or whatever, is probably heavily funded by the CIA , MI5, MOSSAD etc. drug cartel, who in reality NEED to keep certain illegal drugs illegal, this way they keep their monopoly on the whole market rather than sharing, if it were to be legalised. The only question to be asked here is ‘what are they really spending ALL that money on’, certainly not wages, nor correct uniforms. Probably on underground bases that you are not allowed to know about, spy planes, and space weapon technology.

  5. Sandra says:

I think that it should be!

  6. dalkoyo says:

Oh come now! Just think what that would do to all the agencies that would go out with a whimper. How many people would suddenly find themselves without the job they cherished ?

I remember at one time the cigarette companies were ready to start production of the weed sticks! But, no…The government realized they could justify enforcement plans and agents to carry them out.

If it were legalized crime would drop ( police out of jobs), abuse may actually decrease ( drug addiction therapists out of work), and heaven forbid, tax revenues increased ( surpluses could be used to actually help the PEOPLE).

Keep it illegal and the status quo remains. Legalize it and the people will benefit in many unknown ways. Ooops, that’s right I forgot, the PEOPLE can never have a real tangible benefit unless Uncle Sam gets something from it.

  7. Yev says:

Dalkoyo – you do realize everything you said is silly and wrong

police out of work- thats stupid there are other drugs on the street to fight so those who would have fought against marijuana would be transfered to the other sectors.

drug addiction therapists – like i said before there are hundreds of drugs out there, plus marijuana has never proven to have any physical addiction i.e you will not be an addict, recent studies have also shown that it does have some withdrawals but it doesn’t last long, week or 2 and its all mental.

tax revenue increase – think about the profit made you anarchist.

  8. playtoh says:

Does the legalisation of marijuana have any merit in our post 911 reality? I wonder if law has changed from possession of marijuana to some form of terrorism? Terror against Reality?, or something like that.

  9. Stephan says:

i seriosul never would have thought it can cure diseases such as AIDS … it makes sesne why the Governemnt is legalising weed, becasue they rather let people die from diseases … Rothchild and his bitch Rockafeller should all burn in hell .. those greedy fuckers!!!!

    • noname says:

  10. Stephan says:

  11. chiefmcgee420 says:

  12. dalkoyo says:

    Hi Yev,
    It’s called cynical sarcaism. LEAGALIZE!

  13. michelle says:

OMG I AGREE TO THE FULLEST IT SHOULD BE LEGAL IT HELPS ME CONSENTRATE AND CALMS ME DOWN EVERY ONE I NO HAS TRIED IT AND MOST OF THEM SAY ITS A STRESS RELIEVER I LUV WEEED WITH ALL MY LOVE I COULD LIVE OFF IT AND WHEN I DIE IME GONNA GO TO A PLACE CALLED WEED HEAVIN AND EVERY ONE WHOO LOVES IT WILL BE THERE I LOVE WEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. PotStar420 says:

It should really be legalized. Barney Frank is making the movement now. Google/Youtube him to find out all about him. You should write to your local representatives about marijuana and even educate them.

I myself believes that… All drugs should be legalized. I have studied prohibition(Look up alcohol prohibition), and all it leads to is violence and death. Obviously, the war on drugs is NOT working. Legalizing cannabis would bring multiple benefits, as other replies on this site has mentioned. 80% of Americans that are in prison is due to simple personal use. How crazy is that? We pay per person roughly 23k a year on these inmates. I think that our economy is going to shit, and America needs to take some actions on saving some money and bringing us out of this recession.

  15. sparxissparx says:

weed should totaly be legalized cuz like some of you have already said that it would leave space in prisons for ACTUAL crminals so yer.

    LEGALIZE!!!

  16. Riley says:

Legalize!!!!! Marijiuana has so many different people. Some people can handle smokeing it and does not effect there thought patterns or shit like that. i know people who have starting smokeing weed and have excelled in everything and some people who havent. this point can go so many differ’nt ways. marijuana has put so many people awayy for life. People in prison cost money for the goveenment. More deaths happen every year do to alcohol than marijuana. DONT THEY SEE THE FUCKING PICTURE YEAT??????? New Brunswick Weed ROCKS!!!!!!!

  17. kaytlyn says:

it definately should be legal cause have you EVER heard of someone over dosing on weed? no. theres nothin bad about it. its not addicting, and you cant OD.

  18. Gino says:

Weed should be legal. its not like its Heroin where once you’ve started using you get this HUGE addiction. Unlike any other illegal “DRUG” you can’t overdose or get addicted, or even come to find out that there are serious side effects. The only side effects one will get is being: 1)HUNGRY 2)HAPPY 3)SLEEPY.

  19. mario says:

With weed being Illegal the US government is spending unnecessarily HUGE amounts of money to put people away for ever and ever just because they carried a couple grams of weed.

    • suav3cto says:

JAJA…DATS FUNNY… BY DA WAY LIKE DA NAME.. I GOT A BOYFRIEND WIT DA SAME NAME WHO IS AGAINST LEGALIZIN IT…WAT A SHAME…:(

  20. 3upTehWorlds says:

“Weed” has, was and will always be a plant which holds astounding potential for both man, and being. its industrial uses far surpass that of cotton, it grows almost anywhere, and makes the soil more fertile the longer its around… just to name a few of the obvious physical benefits. On the other hand we have THC which as im sure many of you out there are aware is amazing.
tobacco, like the ganja was also, at one time amazing too. The plant leaf was tightly rolled and smoked… yada yada yada… “oh yeah ill have a 35 pack of horizons thanks mate”

IF cannabis were legalized how long do you think it would be before we began to see other chemicals added to the plant? Where would it be sold? Bottle Shops.. Supermarkets?
how would it be sold? in joint form? pre rolled, mixed up with all the usual suspects.. benzene, ammonia? No Thanks…

currently in california where the “govinator” resides there is a push to legalize Ms Jane, if it hasn’t already happened yet. i also suspect more states, if not countries will follow suit…
But we all know, the scum at the top are actually doing this for another reason… they must be… they wouldnt just change their mind on something which has been keeping a significant amount of africian americans behind bars, without a good reason would they?

the last time a culture was flooded with a mind bending drugs was during the 60s, keeping the sheeple nice and “relaxed”

As we move into what looks like the end of human rights and the dawn of the easily predicted big brother scenario, we find ourselves surrounded by mass entertainment and like arnie before i, drugs… a few obvious distractions.
And as everything begins to fall into place for the ultimate ‘fuck you humanity’ we are once again relaxed, and then the curtain will finally be unveiled…

    Ladies and Gentlemen
    Prepare to be stupidified.
